1908 No Motto Saint Gaudens

Designed By Augustus Saint Gaudens

(March 1, 1848 – August 3, 1907)

was the Irish-born American sculptor

of the Beaux-Arts generation who most

embodied the ideals of the "American Renaissance"

Saint-Gaudens died in 1907,

after designing the eagle and double eagle,

but before the designs were finalized for production.

He never seen a production coin.

He Designed the $20 "double eagle" gold piece,

for the US Mint in 1905–1907,

still considered the most beautiful American coin

ever issued as well as the $10 "Indian Head"

gold eagle, both of which were minted

from 1907 until 1933.

No Motto Issue

When the coins were finally released,

they proved controversial as they lacked the words

"In God We Trust", and Congress intervened

to require the motto's use.

The coin was minted,

primarily for use in international trade, until 1933.
